Yet Another Gang Sexual Assault?

Now I normally don’t like to talk about such things on my blog but this is really getting out of hand!

Only a few days back, news broke that a female student of Abia State University in Nigeria was gang raped by five boys who had the effontery to document their dehumanizing act in a video. What these five boys did not bargain for however, was the outcry this audacious act would generate. Thankfully, the government has not taken this news lying down and some arrests have even been made. That is at least comforting, especially as the Youth Minister has also reacted publicly to this news.

However, all of these developments have apparently not served as a deterrent to other master minds of forceful sex. Now only a few days later, the news making the rounds is that yet another sexual assault has taken place, this time with men forcing three ladies into acts of lesbianism and again, documented this wicked act in a video that is now being circulated on the internet. In this 10 minute video shot in Ekpoma University, the girls were forced to kiss and touch one another like lesbians after which they were laid on the ground and flogged like criminals.

All I can say is WHY??? When did Nigerian Youths become so prone to sexual abuse and such sadistic acts???  Amidst the struggle for inclusion in governance and shortage of gainful employment don’t we have enough to worry about? Why throw rape, sexual assault, and physical abuse into the mix? And what is most worrying is the fact that these horrific deeds are recorded, therefore guaranteeing that they make their way to the internet and beyond the shores of this country! What kind of an impression are we giving the rest of the world about the Nigerian youths that are supposed to be the hope of this nation?

Dear reader, whether you are male or female, if you are as angry about this as I am, then we have to do something about this! These girls that have been assaulted are peoples’ daughters, sisters, cousins, friends. Let us put a stop to this by joining our voices against violence against women. Any information you have about the perpetrators of this act is welcome even if given under the condition of anonymity. Let us show these boys and others plotting such evils that there are consequences for such actions. Spread the word and it’s only a matter of time before someone will provide useful information that will lead to the arrest of these monsters.
